The Cape Town EDITION Is Open: Rooms, Prices and What to Know

Africa’s first EDITION, with real rates, points and what’s open.

Marriott’s first EDITION in Africa is located at the harbor in Cape Town. There is a pool on the roof, a spa under sea level and Table Mountain in the background.

The Cape Town EDITION opened on October 27. It is located at Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront with a view out towards the new yacht marina. Table Mountain looms behind. It is the first EDITION hotel in Africa. There are already hotels in London, New York, Tokyo, Lake Como and Shura Island in Saudi Arabia.

Rooms at The Cape Town EDITION

There are 142 rooms and suites at The Cape Town EDITION. Of these, 27 are suites. Marriott doesn’t state the size of each room category on their website. But in their booking engine we found standard Guest Rooms at 34 square meters, Superior King and Queen rooms at 37 square meters, Deluxe King rooms at 50 square meters, Junior Suites at 60 square meters and Deluxe Suites at 72 square meters. Many of the rooms have a view of Table Mountain and some have their own balcony overlooking the harbor and yachts.

The largest is the Penthouse at 240 square meters, followed by the Harbour Suite at 112 square meters. The furniture is bespoke and inspired by traveling trunks from the 1800s. The rugs are made by Shuttleworth Weaving in KwaZulu-Natal.

When the hotel was announced in December last year they also mentioned six private residences. They are not listed in the opening press release and we could not find them in the booking engine.

How much does The Cape Town EDITION cost?

We searched on Marriott for two adults for two nights including taxes.

MonthWithout breakfast (per night)With breakfast for two (per night)
November 202615,565 ZAR (€840 / $936)16,406 ZAR (€885 / $986)
December 2026 (early December)15,565 ZAR (€840 / $936)16,406 ZAR (€885 / $986)
December 2026 (Christmas week)29,088 ZAR (€1,569 / $1,749)31,129 ZAR (€1,680 / $1,871)
January 202717,371 ZAR (€937 / $1,044)18,262 ZAR (€985 / $1,098)

So you can expect to pay around 15,565 ZAR (€840 / $936) per night for the cheapest room in November and early December. Breakfast is not included in the lowest rate, and adding breakfast for two costs around 841 ZAR (€45 / $50) per night. You can check prices for your own dates on Booking.com.

When the hotel became available to book this summer it couldn’t be booked for around three weeks over Christmas and New Year. Christmas week has now opened up from 29,088 ZAR (€1,569 / $1,749) per night, while two-night stays over New Year’s week (December 31 to January 7) are still unavailable and require a longer minimum stay from 34,148 ZAR (€1,842 / $2,053) per night. So if you plan on going to Cape Town over the Christmas period check the dates early.

Can you use Marriott Bonvoy points?

Yes. As the hotel is part of Marriott Bonvoy you can use your points to pay for your stay. When we checked a night was from 141,000 points (with most nights in November and January at 142,000 to 152,000 points, plus around 1,895 ZAR / €102 / $114 per night in local taxes and fees). Compared to the lowest cash rates, that gives you around 0.65 US cents per point before taxes and fees (or around 0.58 US cents per point after deducting the cash fees), rising to around 1.1 US cents per point over Christmas week.

Good to know that you don’t get free breakfast as a Platinum member at EDITION hotels. Like you would at many Marriott brands. Upgrades, early check-in and late check-out still apply.

Restaurants and bars

Shale is the main restaurant at the hotel. Seasonal menus with dry aged meats in-house and mostly South African wines. Breakfast and dinner are served at Shale, lunch is not. On the roof you will find EAVE which is a restaurant/bar by the heated pool. Open from the morning until 2am.

At the Pool Terrace you can grab something to eat from lunch until late in the evening. There is also a Lobby Bar down on the ground floor with a pool table. Open from early in the morning. The Punch Room is a darker bar with wood paneling and velvet seating. Only open Thursday to Saturday so book ahead if you want a seat.

Phil Carmichael is the Executive Chef and George Hunter heads up the bars.

Spa under sea level and pool on the roof

The spa at The Cape Town EDITION is under sea level. There are five treatment rooms and a couples’ suite. As well as sauna, steam room, infrared beds and Therabody. They use Omorovicza products. The gym is open 24 hours and they offer yoga, breathwork and sound bath daily.

The pool is heated which you will need as it can be quite cold on the Atlantic in Cape Town even in the summer months. The waterfront can get quite windy.

Marriott currently has “photo coming soon” on their website for the spa and pool. Not sure what that means but we would give the hotel a call if that’s the draw to your trip.

Brick hotel

Designed by Neri&Hu the hotel is a long horizontal building with sloping roofs to mimic the warehouses along the harbor. The exterior is made up of over six million bricks which were hand placed to create patterns across the facade. There is a feature in the center of the hotel called The Drum. An open cylinder room with stairs leading up to a lookout point.

Art is curated by Southern Guild who are based in Cape Town. In the Punch Room there are photographs by Zanele Muholi. Fading Dish Cloth by Usha Seejarim is in the spa and ceramics by Chuma Maweni are featured throughout the lobby and restaurants.

Where is The Cape Town EDITION and how do you get there?

The Cape Town EDITION is at 7 East Pier Road on the V&A Waterfront. You can walk to the various shops and restaurants on the waterfront, Two Oceans Aquarium and take the ferry to Robben Island. Sea Point is 4km away. Clifton is 8km and Camps Bay is 9km.

The airport is approximately 25 minutes away. There is parking at the hotel and valet is available. No shuttle service from the airport. From Europe, there are direct flights from London on British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Norse, from Frankfurt on Lufthansa and Condor, from Amsterdam on KLM, from Paris on Air France, from Zurich on Edelweiss and from Istanbul on Turkish Airlines. From the US, United flies direct from Newark and Washington Dulles, and Delta flies direct from Atlanta.

Best time to visit is during the South African summer. November through to March.

Who is The Cape Town EDITION for?

If you’re after a quieter hotel this may not be for you. As one of the newest luxury hotels in Cape Town, EDITION has a lot of buzz with their rooftop bar, Punch Room and a lobby that locals will frequent. We think it would suit couples or groups of friends who want action around them and want to be at the heart of the harbor. If you’re after a more secluded beach experience then Ellerman House in Bantry Bay could be a good alternative. Or if you want to be close to art and have views over the harbor The Silo is right there. One&Only Cape Town is also located on the Waterfront and would be a good family hotel.

We have not stayed at the hotel. All information is gathered from Marriott’s press release and their website and booking engine. We will update this post when we’ve had a chance to stay.
